Billiard table lighting

Billiard table lighting

For the game of billiards to be enjoyable, the table should be properly illuminated. The light should not be reflected from the balls or hurt your eyes. At the same time, the whole table should be well lit.

Modern lighting requirements are as follows:

Lighting parameters for competitions:

– The table playing area should have a minimum illumination of 300 lux.

– An illumination level of 500 lux is considered as an average value.

– The maximum table illumination should be below 900 lx.

For training purposes, table lighting should be:

– Minimum illuminance: 200 lux

– The average illuminance is 330 lux.

– The maximum illuminance on the horizontal surface of the table should be 600 lux.

The minimum illuminance should normally be measured by placing the meter in the corner of the table.

Proper illumination of billiard tables

Special lamps are used to illuminate the billiard table properly. There are usually 1-12 of them, depending on the size of the table. If the table is 9 feet in length, 4 lamps are enough to illuminate it. To illuminate a 12-foot table, you will need 6 lamps.

In order to avoid dazzling the balls and disturbing the players, the lamps are fitted with frosted diffusers, the wattage of which is 13-15 watts for LEDs and 20-25 watts for energy-saving lamps.

The lamps are made of various materials. Steel, different plastics and fabrics are used.

If the lamp is made of metal, all the light falls on the horizontal plane of the table. Plastic bulbs are slightly less efficient because some of the light is lost. Fabric, because it absorbs some of the light, is even less efficient. Fabric lamps should not be used in public places because of the increased risk of fire.

Luminaires can be simple, with no frills. Or they can be more sophisticated. The choice of lampshade is a matter of taste. The lamps should be chosen to match the overall design of the billiard room.
