The correct stance of a billiards player

The best way to learn how to play billiards is to start by learning how to position your body correctly. This will allow you to improve your accuracy, greatly enhance your game and be in complete control of the situation. It should be understood that there are no strict standards for the stance of the billiard player. You must choose the position that is most comfortable for you. For an optimal position in the game of billiards, it is necessary that the body is immobile during the shot and that the working shoulder is correctly positioned. This “golden rule” should be followed throughout the entire game. It is also necessary to stabilise the position of the torso by keeping it still so that only the arm moves;

Follow the rule of the 5 points: each of them is located on the traverse of the stroke.

How should we take a good position when playing billiards?

First of all, determine the direction of the shot. Professionals usually find it by standing upright and looking at the table from above.

Then place your right foot on the continuation of the ball’s trajectory or at a slight angle to it. Don’t twist your toe too much, this will give you stability and improve your shot.

Aim with both eyes looking directly at the balls (not sideways).

Mentally extend the direction of the shot on the ground.

Walk to the table and place your bridge hand (left hand if you are not left-handed) on the table close to the ball.

Check the position of the supporting leg (the supporting leg is the one closest to the table).

Place the other leg next to the first, slightly bent and with the toe turned outwards. You can also do it the other way round – the second leg behind the supporting leg, with the centre of the foot on the crossbar of the kick or slightly offset to the side, with the foot at a 45 degree angle.

With the other hand, grip the cue so that it is in a balanced position.

Lean as much as possible towards the table.

Position your forearm at 90 degrees to the cue.

Controlling the 5-point rule

It takes some time to find the right position. To get it right, you need to control the position of your body. The hand, elbow and shoulder of the hand holding the cue, the eyes exactly perpendicular to it, and finally the chin. The elbow should not lean to the side.

Additional practice

It is also possible to practise the position at home, without a billiard table, balls or anything else. All you need is a cue of the necessary length and a mirror to check. Pay particular attention to the movements of the hitting hand. It is necessary to achieve that you are comfortable, the body remains motionless and only the elbow move
